The BB bill is not law yet. Our fight heads back to the House
Today was discouraging, but the fight shown by Kansans was impressive. Let's continue that fight in the House until this saga is over.
Kansas Senators Disappoint
As many of you have heard by now, the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA) passed in the Senate earlier today after J.D. Vance was pulled in to cast the tie-breaking vote. Both Kansas Senators Jerry Moran & Roger Marshall voted for the bill.
Feel free to contact your senators and share your thoughts on their vote. If in another state, you can find your senators at ksleglookup.org/search. All democrats and three republican senators — Rand Paul (KY), Thom Tillis (NC), and Susan Collins (ME) — voted against the bill. All other republicans joined our Kansas senators in passing the OBBBA.

Kansans used our voices!
Despite the outcome, I’m still proud of the number of Kansans who have been speaking out against this bill. The 5 calls app tracks the calls made though their app and Kansas had a good showing.
And I saw lots of people commenting on social media that they were making calls. Thank you all!
Now we move onto the House — keep up the good work!
The House is scheduled to be on the floor Wednesday morning to take up the Senate’s version of the OBBBA. It’s unclear at this time if they have the votes to pass it. A number of moderate members (or those in tough re-election areas) say they are unhappy with the Senate’s harsher cuts to Medicaid, while the deficit hawks in the House aren’t happy that the Senate bill increases the deficit even more than the House version.
As of now leadership says they are voting on the Senate bill as is, but there are also 438 proposed amendments (mostly from democrats) that have been published. So, I’m not sure how the day will go. They may have to get through all of those amendments before they can take a final vote or maybe leadership can just force a vote right away. I’m still learning how all of the things work at the federal level and with a reconciliation bill.
I believe if any one of those amendments passes, it will change the Senate bill and the Senate will have to vote again on the new version.
Anyway, stay tuned. I’ll be following Jake Sherman from Punchbowl News on Twitter for updates as the process moves forward.
TAKE ACTION — Contact your House Representative
I’m not going to lie. Other than democrat Sharice Davids, our Kansas representatives aren’t expected to vote against this bill. But…
a) you never know, and
b) we shouldn’t make this easy for them.
Take 2 minutes to contact them. Below you’ll find their phone number and two EASY links to choose from to send an email. Don’t let them get away with saying they didn’t hear from Kansans.

Note: When calling Sharice Davids, you might thank her for her previous no vote on the bill. It’s always nice for our reps to get positive feedback too.
My name is _____________. I’m calling from [city], zip code _________. I’m asking Representative __________ to vote NO on the budget reconciliation bill. The cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in this bill will hurt our most vulnerable Kansans — children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities. The steep Medicaid cuts will also threaten the closure of more hospitals, hurting the health and economies of our rural communities.
If you’d like to share some of the specific Kansas impacts when calling, these graphics included in yesterday’s newsletter provide some easy statistics to share.
Emails — easy, quick, pre-populated!
Use the links below from these two fantastic advocacy groups to send a quick and easy email. These emails are pre-populated and will be sent directly to your representative based on your address. It’s always best if you can use your own wording or even better if you have a personal experience to share.

Fingers crossed
I’m holding my breath and waiting to see what happens. I’m thankful for everyone who has been engaged in this process. I don’t know if our engagement is going to give us a win this time or not, but I do know we have to try our best to not become cynical and to stay in the fight. You may know I love a good Taylor Swift song lyric:

If the “One Big Beautiful Bill” does pass, our next job will be to help people really understand the consequences and to make sure they don’t forget how their members of congress voted when November 2026 rolls around.
